All nouns, whether simple or complex, can be followed by one or more suffixes. When there are multiple suffixes, they must appear in a specific order. Suffixes can be grouped based on their position after the noun. There are five types of suffixes, which we'll refer to as Types 1 through 5.
-
Suffixes of Type 1 come immediately after the noun.
-
Suffixes of Type 2 follow those of Type 1.
-
Suffixes of Type 5 come last.
This order can be shown like this:
NOUN -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5
If no Type 1 suffix is used but a Type 2 suffix is, then the Type 2 suffix comes directly after the noun. Similarly, if only a Type 5 suffix is used, it comes right after the noun.
The order of suffixes is important only when two or more are used together. Each suffix type has at least two suffixes, and only one suffix of each type can be used at a time. For example, a noun cannot be followed by two or three Type 4 suffixes.
