Like the Type 3 noun suffixes, these verb suffixes communicate how confident or certain the speaker feels about their statements. In Klingon culture, the use of these suffixes reflects the speaker's commitment to precision and truthfulness, underscoring their respect for accuracy—an essential aspect of Klingon values.
-chu' (clearly, perfectly)
The suffix -chu' shows that the action is carried out thoroughly, accurately, or without any ambiguity:
- jIyajchu' – I clearly understand (yaj – understand)
- baHchu' – he/she fired (the torpedo) perfectly (baH – fire [a torpedo])
- 'otlh peng Qeqchu' – he/she aims the photon torpedo precisely (Qeq – aim [a weapon])
- HoS lI' Dalo'Ha'chu' – You completely waste useful energy (HoS – energy, lo' – use)
- tlhIngan tIgh Dapabchu' – You fully observe Klingon traditions (tIgh – customs, pab – observe)
-bej (certainly, undoubtedly, definitely)
Adding -bej indicates total certainty, leaving no doubt in the speaker's mind about the statement:
- chImbej – it's definitely empty (chIm – be empty)
- nuSeHbej – he/she is undoubtedly controlling us (SeH – control)
- Dalbej – it's unquestionably boring (Dal – be boring)
- javmaH tat chu'wI' vIneHbej – I definitely want sixty ion triggers (javmaH – 60, tat – ion, chu'wI' – trigger, neH – want)
- taghbej mu'qaD veS – Curse warfare has clearly begun (tagh – begin, mu'qaD – curse, veS – warfare)
- qu'bej QoghlIj – Your Qogh is undoubtedly fierce (qu' – fierce, Qogh – a type of creature)
-law' (apparently, seemingly)
The suffix -law' indicates that the speaker is uncertain or is making an assumption. It can be interpreted as meaning "it seems," "I suspect," or "I think":
- chImlaw' – it seems empty (chIm – be empty)
- nuSeHlaw' – I think he/she is controlling us (SeH – control)
- nughochlaw' Dujvetlh – that ship appears to be following us (ghoch – tyrack, Duj – ship)
-ba' (obviously)
When the speaker believes the fact stated should be clear to the listener, -ba' is used. However, unlike -bej, this suffix allows slight room for doubt or uncertainty:
- nepwI' Daba' – he/she is obviously lying (nepwI' – liar, Da – behave as)
- vaj DatIvba' – then you are obviously enjoying it (vaj – thus, tIv – enjoy)
