latlh De'/Additional Information

Upon reaching a certain age, the Age of Ascension, a young Klingon undergoes a rite of passage symbolizing the attainment of a certain spiritual level. After intoning the three ancient and scared phrases recorded above, the initiate, while walking along a path lined by painstik-wielding warriors, expresses his or her deepest feelings.

Real power is in the heart.

Type: proverb - Source: TKW

latlh De'/Additional Information

In this phrase, the heart stands for one's spirit or principles. One's ability to exert influence over others comes from having a strong sense of morality, not merely from the ability to dominate by force.

When the clone of Kahless was named emperor, the Klingon cleric Koroth objected that it would be meaningless since all power would still remain with the Klingon High Council. Worf used this adage to point out that Kahless's lack of political authority was not as important as his honor and virtue, which would make him an effective leader of his people.

Type: proverb - Source: TKW

the sword is in the ocean - there is no going back

Type: idiom - Source: KGT

latlh De'/Additional Information

{bIQ'a'Daq 'oHtaH 'etlh'e'.} ("The sword is in the ocean.")

This is another expression based on a story about Kahless. After Kahless's brother, Morath, killed their father, Morath threw their father's sword into the ocean, saying that if he could not have the sword, no one could.

After that, the brothers never spoke again. The idiom {bIQ'a'Daq 'oHtaH 'etlh'e'} ("The sword is in the ocean"; {bIQ'a',} "ocean"; {'etlh,} "sword") is used to mean that something has ended, that it is impossible to return to a prior condition, just as Kahless and Morath never spoke to each other again. The expression might be used, for example, in reference to a treaty that was just signed, suggesting that a former state of antagonism has ended forever. Of course, simply saying that something will last forever does not make it so. If an alliance ends, the phrase is equally apt: the era of peace has ended, and the sword is in the ocean---there is no going back.

Type: sentence - Source: paq'batlh: Force Book

In space, all warriors are cold warriors.

Type: proverb - Source: TKW

latlh De'/Additional Information

Since this expression refers to being in space ({loghDaq}), it is either a relatively new saying or else it is an updated version of an older one. There is no way to know for sure. Klingon have been capable of interplanetary travel for at least 200 standard years, enough time for many new phrases to work their way into common usage. Clearly, it refers to warriors being in an environment far away from governmental or bureaucratic fetters, a setting where warriors are free to be just warriors and not worry about political consequences. Without knowing more about ancient Klingon history, what, if anything, might have predated "{loghDaq}" in the expression cannot be determined. Perhaps it was a term referring to the open seas, as the Klingons have a history of naval warfare. The Klingon words translated "cold warriors" are "{Suvrupbogh SuvwI'pu'}," literally, "warriors who are ready to fight."

This is the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first season trading card. It features a text similar to the classic opening voice over of the original Star Trek series. This card was available in different languages in the set: in Klingon (card 99), Japanese (98), Spanish (97), French (96), German (95) and finally English (01). The text of the Klingon card was reproduced in HolQeD 3:2, p.9. (Usually abbreviated DS99, though sometimes abbreviated S99 or DSN99.) The pIqaD text is non-standard.

This marking represents the Klingon Empire and has been emblazoned upon the hulls of countless Klingon Starships. During the aggressive expansion of the Klingon people from their homeworld of Kronos into space, this symbol grew to become as feared throughout the galaxy as the menacing profiles of their battlecruisers.

All Klingon vessels are equipped with a cloaking device, allowing the ship to fly in a state of practical invisibility. Cloaking technology was gained through an alliance with the Romulan Star Empire, possibly in exchange for Warp Drive technology. Due to the tremendous energy drain of a cloaking device, weapons cannot be discharged while the cloak is in operation.
