Between

Klingon has two distinct ways to express the idea of "between," depending on what exactly is meant. Each construction has a specific use based on whether you are referring to a point within a range or the entire span between two things. Both of these constructions can be used as timestamps.

1. A Point Between Two Limits

When "between A and B" refers to a point that lies somewhere in the range defined by A and B (but not necessarily at either end), Klingon uses:

rav A 'aqroS B

Here, rav means "minimum" and 'aqroS means "maximum." This construction is often used for measurements or ranges.

  • rav cha' 'uj(mey) 'aqroS loS 'uj(mey) 'ab
It has a length between two and four uj (it is at least two uj long and no more than four).

  • rav DaSjaj 'aqroS buqjaj maghom
We meet at some point between Monday and Friday.

See section 5.2.1 Using Numbers for more examples.

2. The Full Span Between Two Points

When "between A and B" refers to the entire span from A to B — such as a continuous stretch of time, distance, or activity — Klingon uses the noun qubbID ("span" or "interval").

  • DaSjaj buqjaj (je) qubbID maleng
We travel between Monday and Friday. (We travel the whole span from Monday to Friday.)

  • DaSjaj buqjaj (je) qubbID maghom
We meet between Monday and Friday. (We meet sometime during that span.)

So, to summarize:

  • Use rav... 'aqroS... for a location, count, or moment within a range.

  • Use qubbID for the entire span from one point to another.
