English: be at a distance of, lie at a distance of
Source: qepHom 2025
KLCP Level: 3
MO: It always expresses the distance from where the speaker is to another place (unless the speaker constructs the sentence otherwise).
vagh qelI'qam wey' juHwIj
My home is at a distance of five kellicams. My home is five kellicams (away) from here.
juHlIjDaq vagh qelI'qam wey' juHwIj
My home is five kellicams from your home. literally: At your home, my home lies at a distance of five kellicams.
LL: Are the following correct?
SoHDaq vagh qelI'qam vIwey'.
jIHDaq vagh qelI'qam Dawey'.
MO: Correct.
1 qelIāqam ~ 2 km
1 āuj = 34,83 cm
LL: If I understand correctly, the distance is measured from the locative, so:
juHlIjDaq vagh qelI'qam wey' Duj. = from your home.
ghaHDaq vagh qelI'qam wey' Duj. = from him/her.
naDev vagh qelI'qam wey' Duj. = from here.
paā vagh qelI'qam weyā Duj. = from there.
MO: All good. You can (but donāt have to) leave out naDev. If the location (the -Daq place) isnāt specified, itās assumed to be where the speaker is.
LL: What about these?
raS bIngDaq vagh 'uj wey' ghop. [?]
The hand is 5 uj above the table.
raS āemDaq vagh 'uj wey' quS. [?]
The chair is 5 uj behind the table.
MO: I donāt think these work. The first example says the hand is four uj away from the area above the table. But the āarea above the table" extends from the table upward to forever, so the hand could be on the floor under a 4-uj table and still be 5 uj away from a point 1 uj above the table (so itās really only 1 uj above the table).
