The D-12 Bird-of-Prey was recalled from service in the 24th century due to a defective plasma coil in the cloaking device.  Lursa and B'Etor's old D-12 was destroyed by the Enterprise-D by using an ionic pulse which reset the coil, causing the ship to suddenly cloak and drop its shields. (ST:Gen)

In TOS "Mirror, Mirror" an ion storm is also referred to as a magnetic storm.  The long-range transporter left an ionization trail between Gamma II and Triskelion nearly 12 light years long.  (TOS "The Gamesters of Triskelion")
